Articolo and the art of light

A celebrated designer, Nicci Green is the founder and director of Australian design studio Articolo.

The studio was launched in Paris in 2010 and pursues a mission of exploring ‘the art of light’ through handcrafted artisanal pieces. Articolo’s range now includes over 20 collections, each of which brings together the soulfulness of mouth-blown glass with timeless design influences.

Articolo, which successfully launched into the United States earlier this year, has had its designs featured in some of the world’s finest interiors, from luxury hotel brands to acclaimed restaurants.

ICON and Articolo have collaborated on our projects George + Powlett in East Melbourne and Cantala in Caulfield.

Nicci spoke to us about the unique collaboration for George + Powlett, which created a new interpretation of the studio’s Fizi ‘champagne’ ball.

Could you tell us a bit about Articolo and its mission?

For a passionate interiors and design objects person like myself, the home is a place to cocoon from the rigours and fast pace of the world we live in. Sensory spaces are very important to me – flickering candlelight, scented candles, lamplight and music are all essential to making a house a home. Lighting is essential in creating a mood and an ambience.

At the time of establishing Articolo there were not many bespoke Australian lighting companies. This type of work was being done out of the United States, the UK and Europe, in the main. I felt there was a gap in the market for superbly designed artisanal lighting that was unique, sculptural and detailed yet timeless.

Can you explain the process that goes into creating Articolo’s collections? What inspires you?

I take inspiration from everything around me – fashion, art and nature, to name just a few sources. I strive to design lighting that is timeless. Not faddish or tricky, just simplicity of form.

I also follow a principle of balance. Masculine lines coupled with fluid glass forms that bring artisanal femininity. We introduce a sense of movement into the forms through the subtle striations found in organic mouth-blown glass forms.

Articolo designed lighting for ICON’s George + Powlett project. Can you tell us a bit about the design process for that specific project?

This has been the most wonderful collaboration. I jumped at the chance when ICON and architects Powell & Glenn approached me. I am a huge fan of both companies and knew this project would reflect the sophistication, quality and timeless design I celebrate. It was the perfect marriage for Articolo.

We wanted to create a special light piece that was sculptural, organic yet sophisticated. The starting point was our Fizi ball which is luxurious and completely unique. When lit, the Fizi ball casts the most extraordinary ‘champagne-esque’ bubble detailing onto the surrounding walls.

The brief and concept from Powell + Glenn was to create a large-scale glass light piece with Fizi detailing for the living room of each apartment. No easy task! We worked closely with our glass blowers to create this unique wall sconce – no two are the same. The subtlety of form and the artisanal quality of the Fizi bubbles suspended weightlessly in the glass is breathtaking. It has been designed exclusively for this project and is not available elsewhere in the world.
